Sogang University (서강대학교)
History & Mission
Sogang University was established in 1960 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Its educational philosophy is rooted in Jesuit values — a commitment to intellectual rigor, social justice, and service. Sogang aims to form well-rounded individuals who are morally grounded and academically strong.
Academic Culture & Research
Sogang offers a broad liberal arts foundation along with strong professional schools. Its curriculum encourages critical thinking, creativity, and ethical leadership. With strong research programs, Sogang is particularly known for excellence in areas like mathematics and nanoscience. The university combines a rigorous academic atmosphere with a personal mentorship tradition.
Internationalization & Student Life
Sogang attracts a sizable number of international students (~1,500), and provides support via its Office of International Affairs. There are scholarship opportunities (e.g., GKS / NIIED) that help international students financially. The campus is located in the vibrant Sinchon / Mapo area of Seoul, giving students access to rich cultural, social, and academic life.
Campus & Facilities
Sogang’s campus occupies ~59.6 acres in Mapo-gu, Seoul, and includes about 36 buildings: academic halls, student centers, dormitories (e.g., Gonzaga International Hall), plazas, and more. The Jesuit heritage is visible in some of the architecture, and student life is supported by modern facilities, lounges, gyms, and common areas.
