Istanbul University (İstanbul Üniversitesi)
History & Identity
Istanbul University is one of Turkey’s oldest and most historically significant higher‑education institutions. Its lineage goes back to 1453 with the Sahn-ı Seman madrasa, but it was officially restructured as Istanbul University in 1933 during the Turkish Republic’s university reform. The university’s motto, “Science Bridge from Past to the Future,” captures its mission of combining deep historical roots with modern academic excellence.
Academic Culture & Research
IU is a large, research‑intensive university with 15 faculties, 12 institutes, many vocational schools, and research centers. It offers a wide range of programs — from medicine and law to sciences, arts, economics, and more. The university strongly emphasizes research, education quality, and global engagement.
Internationalization & Student Life
The university draws a significant number of international students and faculty, supported through English‑taught programs, Erasmus / exchange partnerships, and many global collaborations. On the student‑life side, Istanbul University is very active: the Student Culture Center reports 285 student clubs in scientific, cultural, artistic, and social responsibility areas. About 120,000+ student participations in club activities were reported in a recent year.
Campus & Facilities
The main campus in Beyazıt / Fatih is historic, with architecture that reflects Ottoman and early-republic traditions.
